Utah Jazz are a three-piece punk act out of Buffalo, NY featuring members of Brown Sugar and Mayday!. While those two bands act as a good jumping off point, Utah Jazz take aspects of their respective sounds and run in a whole new direction with them, creating a blend of classic guitar rock and weird punk. Ever wanted to hear a flute solo on a punk song? The track “Florida” has just that. Essential and odd, the band uses the dueling male/female vocals as well as anyone going today. The Utah Jazz EP came out back in 2012 on Feral Kid Records and Media Schlitz, and a cassette titled Green Tracks + Brown Notes was released last year, both of which are still kicking around. Utah Jazz keep it out there along with other essential Buffalo weirdos like Bad People and Sperm. Keep your ears open for the Utah Jazz LP (or 10” maybe?) that is in the works, a classic in the making.
