Ursula — Cavegrrl

by

Bi-coastal punk duo Ursula is ready to rage. Putting out demos on their Bandcamp in the summer of 2014 ultimately culminated in their single “Cavegrrl,” a riotous middle finger to the partriarchy. Recorded with that peculiar lo-fi quality heard only in the most local of basements, Ursula’s music is frantic, ugly, and tailor-made for girls who just want to have fun. The girlish giggling on experimental demo tracks are mere appendages to the wild she-beast that is slowly building inside. They’re getting ready for something, even if listeners aren’t quite sure what that is.

It’s no matter, because they plan to rip you to shreds anyway. “Motherfucker, motherfucker, motherfucker,” they chant as the drums build momentum in “Cavegrrl.” This is premature revolution music, just before punches are thrown in a mosh pit. Guttural, it’s classic riot grrrl because yes, at this point there are motifs, even in this genre. Ursula is making music that we need now, that we’ve always needed. A deranged guitar, a time-sensitive drum, and two females who are ready to fight the world on behalf of womanhood equal Ursula, a band making a stand every time they walk on stage.

Are you down? Let’s go.
