Ultimate Painting is a group comprised of James Hoare and Jack Cooper of respective British indie rock outfits Veronica Falls and Mazes. The pair has an album coming out this fall on Chicago’s ever-consistent psych purveyor Trouble in Mind Records.
On the Trouble In Mind spectrum between craftmanship pop and hypnotic psyche, the output of the band on this album firmly sits on the former side, as you might expect from a spawn of the aforementioned groups. Their self-titled song gathers a 2000’s-era-Malkmus-sounding clean tone, a charming minimalist arrangement, some baroque psych harmonies, and in the spotlight, a perfectly lackadaisical, noodling riff that bends and twists just like overcooked spaghetti. The tumblr created by Jack Cooper called Art is Cheap reinforces the modus operandi of this project. On the site he’ll take indidvidual song commissions via email for 10 pounds and rapidly churn out a track, with a spontaneous enterprise worthy of Robert Pollard. Likewise ethos of this track seems place the sanctity of an earworm on a pedestal in all its rare and spur-of-the moment glory. When you catch one, put it front and center and let it do the heavy lifting.
Grip the LP here this fall.
