THE UKIAH DRAG – “DIRT TRIP”

by

Boston-Providence post-punkers The Ukiah Drag are at it again, with their debut 7” coming out on Wharf Cat Records. This A-side, the title track “Dirt Trip,” is another slice of gritty and dirgy gloom-punk from the reigning kings of dark and dreary rock n’ roll music. Drowned in reverb and featuring hypnotic repeating riffs, “Dirt Trip” is all that you can possibly hope for if you’ve been waiting for new Ukiah Drag material. These born Floridians bring out the spirit of the swamps in this tune; you get pulled down into the muck but for some reason you don’t quite mind it. With heavily reverbed sing-talking vocals and noisy and spooky guitar lines, this song is a real aural experience; Ukiah Drag have all but mastered the art of atmosphere. About halfway through the song, these guys have a near-transcendental moment as the frontman repeats the chant, “If you pray, you’ll be saved” in an echoey refrain, and you just have to hear it to believe it; with this one repeated refrain Ukiah Drag have created a defining moment for their music. Rumor has it that the B-side is going to be a Stones cover, and I can’t imagine these guys not absolutely killing it. Pre-order this shit ASAP, because these guys are making some crucial music right about now with their mix of darkly bluesy post-punk. And don’t miss them tomorrow night with The Men at Great Scott.
