Tyler, The Creator — “Fucking Young/Death Camp”

by

In the above video, TYLER, THE CREATOR faces a situation that pretty famous rap stars might have to deal with, but us regular joes (larrys, phils, and yes dans) are thoughtfully spared of having to deal with. The sometimes verbage-controversial, and sadly at times misogynistic rapper (and RZA to ODD FUTURE) has a new album out called CHERRY BOMB. The record finds him all over the hip hop map, coming at us with many different approaches and vibes, from angry diatribes to darker groove centered tracks, to ironic soul pop ballads.

“Fucking Young/Death Camp ” is mostly “Fucking Young,” with the “Death Camp” portion of the video being only the first part of that song. “Fucking Young” is the borderline early ’70s STEVIE WONDER homage dressed up as a soul pop rap track and accompanied by that silly, sometimes funny video above. “Death Camp” moves us more in the direction of the weirder TYLER, THE CREATOR that I showed up here for in the first place. Sounding like BUSTA RHYMES fronting some kind of nu metal band, that doesn’t suck like most (almost all) nu metal bands, we get like almost 2 minutes of the song which is a weird place to pull the plug on a video and a song, but it’s his call I guess! Before it ends though it heads into the desert in the style of the new MAD MAX movie, a movie that features an amazing nu metal-ish character in a small but simply amazing role. The rest of the album is pretty much the weird soul and funk sample-laden experimental rap weirdness that makes this guy one of the best out there today. Check it out below.
