Twist – Spectral

by

Spectral, the new LP by Twist, is as addictive as junk food, but without worry of an upset stomach. It pulls you in almost immediately and demands multiple listens. Twist’s sound is brimming with energy, but still manages to be very easy to listen to.

With fat, warm bass and reverb-laden guitars, the band’s sound engulfs the listener. The addition of electronic percussion to many of the tracks adds to the texture of the sound, and keeps surprising. The female vocals cut through and capture the attention of the listener with silky smooth delivery and terrific production. As the infectious vocal melodies intermingle with well-written guitar hooks, the result is like a book you can’t put down. These tracks seem to have the attitude and DIY feel of the underground scene, but still have the production and pop-sensibility to appeal to a wide audience.

Perhaps what is most appealing about this album is the subtle diversity of its songs. While certain aspects of the band’s sound remain constant, they use changes in structure and mood to make each track stand out. Upbeat and poppy songs like “Pavement” and “Bleached” capture your ear quickly and set the tone for the album. But other songs stand out for their differences, like the darker, edgier “Calendar Girls”, or the quiet, somber “Keep You Under”. The rough guitar work on “Slums and Seaports”, utilizing the chord structure of a country/blues ballad, make it a real standout track. Twist‘s versatile and multi-dimensional sound is something to be excited about.
