On the surface, Audrey Harrer’s “Ancient Honey” (off of her debut Alphabet Rain) comes off as innocent and cute chamber pop (complete with harp and strings and a voice that at times sounds like a dead ringer for early Grace Slick), but one can’t help but feel that there’s something slightly sinister going on beneath the polished interior.
First there’s cryptic lyrics documenting….exactly what is hard to say, but it all just might be an allusion to a tragic heroine who is about to be sucked into a plot involving her and her best lover who will eventually die from a hand of a jealous husband.
So don’t let the cuteness of it all fool you — this is dark noir through and through.
