Brooklyn-based guitarist and producer Torn Hawk (aka Luke Wyatt) is back with “I’m Flexible”, the first single off Let’s Cry and Do Pushups At the Same Time, which will be his first album on the venerable Mexican Summer label as well as my pick for album title of the year. The track retains the core traits of Torn Hawk’s earlier work for labels like 1080p, Not Not Fun and L.I.E.S., but with a more nuanced sense of emotion and dynamics.

The production on “I’m Flexible” uses a lot of somewhat harsh tonal elements to create something that’s actually quite pleasurable to listen to. Video gamey drums and synths plunk and bleep around the broad, soaring guitars which are at the song’s core. There’s nostalgia and whimsy here, which goes perfectly with the MS Paint-esque playfulness of the video clip.

Let’s Cry and Do Pushups At the Same Time will be available from Mexican Summer on Monday, November 10th, 2014.
