It’s the ideal 80’s prom slow dance jam. “Outside”, from the band TOPS’ sophomore album, PICTURE YOU STARING, is a dreamy synth-pop track with a nostalgic sound that manages to feel fresh in a sea of 90’s recall.

The mix of subdued electronic pulses and singer Jane Penny’s ethereal vocals draws you into the effortlessly melancholic song. Longing lyrics uncover a fragmented love triangle, but the delicate instrumentation and absolute 80’s influence keep the tune from weighing you down.

Out of Montreal, the group has been quietly working away at TOPS released PICTURE YOUR STARING for the past year. Since their debut album TENDER OPPOSITES came out in 2011, bassist Madeline Glowicki has come on board, making subtle but noticable addition to the mesmerizing disco sheen starlight . Both albums were written, produced and released by the band via ARBUTUS RECORDS.
