Hey, look! It’s the Bay Area’s latest British new-wave band, The Mantles. Truthfully, these San Fran rockers are, actually, from San Francisco, but if their latest 7″ isn’t the perfectly crafted hybrid of the Buzzcocks and Real Estate, then . . . is the sky blue? “Memory,” the A-side, is a chilled-out but sensible post-punk song with just a hint of a surfy vibe that reminds me of a sunny Saturday afternoon—damn you San Franciscans and your eternally pleasant weather. The B-side, “Undelivered,” is just as mellow but a bit more folky, hinting at the roots of English psych. Anyhow, however you want to define them, or not define them, the Mantles are some killer songwriters—see Dan Shea salivate over the catchy melody of a past track here. For those of you interested in delving a little deeper, they’ve also got a pretty solid back discography, including releases from Slumberland, Mexican Summer, and Siltbreeze.
Listen to “Memory” below. The 7″ can be purchased via Slumberland.
