THE MANTLES – ALL ODDS END

by

Every once in a while you pull out a record you haven’t listened to in years and it stirs an echo of the response it did upon first hearing it. Evoking a time, a place, a different point in your life. That nostalgia can cause you to look to see if the band still exists, and if they’ve done anything recently. Such is the case of The Mantles, who released a self-titled record in 2009 at a time when the market was over saturated with a particularly tiresome indie rock sound that they managed to breathe life into while nearly transcending. Fast forward to 2016 and The Mantles are still at it. The fall of 2015 saw the release of their third LP, and second on Slumberland Records, All Odds End. While retaining the loose and jangly sound that characterized their particular brand of lo-fi indie pop on the first album, All Odds End finds the garagey and lightly psychedelic elements at a minimum. Here the record is dominated by infectious keyboard hooks. The result is a mix between the sounds of early Siltbreeze and Sarah Records with even a dash of something more concretely 60s in the interplay between jangly guitar and sedately crooning vocals. All Odds End hints at the sun-soaked lo-fi indie of bands like The Fresh & Onlys while displaying consistently stronger writing and some memorable riffs. Recommended track: “Doorframe
