A great beauty and a great star, but above all a great actress, Ingrid Bergman was among the most versatile leading ladies to grace the silver screen during her long, peripatetic career. While this month’s retrospective skips the Swedish roles that first brought her to international attention, it culls a representative sample from Bergman’s ample canon, setting classic works by iconic Hollywood directors (Hitchcock’s Spellbound and Notorious, George Cukor’s Gaslight) alongside two of the equally legendary films Bergman made in Italy with her then-husband Roberto Rossellini (Stromboli and Journey to Italy), without neglecting either her swan song, that other Bergman’s Autumn Sonata, or the sublime Casablanca, a romance as wry and radiant as the actress herself.
