The Coolidge @fter Midnite Honors Lloyd Kaufman

11/6-11/28 @COOLIDGE

by

For over a decade, the Coolidge Corner Theatre has bestowed their annual Coolidge Award upon a wide variety of cinematic luminaries, from Meryl Streep and Jonathan Demme to cinematographer Vittorio Storaro and longtime Scorsese editor Thelma Schoonmaker. But what about the oddballs, the cultish weirdos lurking in the fringes? This year, the Coolidge bestows the very first Coolidge After Midnite award to Lloyd Kaufman, the bowtied, hyperactive mouthpiece of the legendarily schlocky Troma Entertainment. The choice is fitting: with its gross-out humor and consistently inspired titles, Troma has served as a gateway for generations of budding cinepunks, and no one embodies that spirit like the studio’s president and lead director. Throughout the month of November, the Coolidge will hold midnight screenings of such joyously profane Tromasterpieces as Tromeo and Juliet, Class of Nuke ‘Em High, and Poultrygeist, plus the all-time classic Toxic Avenger, at which screening Lloyd will graciously (?) accept his honor.
