BOSTON/NE BANDS, Fresh Stream

The Channels — Disposable Camera

by

The Channels are on tour right friggin’ now. And they have released their second full length record (or first, if you consider this incarnation of the band to actually be a new band, which, more or less, it is) calling the thing, DISPOSABLE CAMERA. The record is only six songs deep, but three of them go beyond the four-minute mark, so it’s worth it to keep your ear hands reaching for these (as of right now) digital-only tracks. Totally worth it.

The trio of The Channels apply a generally scorched guitar aesthetic to a funky (in a post-punk, often sinister, endless-groove sense) rhythm section. When the three come together, there is some seriously heady noise rock happening across these six songs. The aggression of noise rock is almost nonexistent in the hands of these three Bostonians, with singer and guitarist Wes Kaplan speak-singing and emitting shoegaze-flavored falsetto vocal mist. These entire proceedings definitely feel outer indie rock inflected, and I suppose that’s where we’d find the shoegazers.

Throughout Disposable Camera, Kaplan’s guitar playing oscillates between siren bleet akin to Arab On Radar and a spacious nonpsychedelic cloud of sound. “Wade” is a prime example of the guitar and vocals being presented wall of sound style, hovering just above a constantly undulating highway of bass and drums. This is music that people might want to dance to, but definitely should dance to, feet planted, doing the cobra.  On “The Same Thing,” the band wanders out into the desert a bit. The track is a shuffle, grounded by a Parliament-worthy fatass bassline. Spoken word vocals work really well here, and the guitar playing and drumming are really amazing; drummer Nick’s snare taking up the space that the guitar vacates here at times. What a strangely funky wash of a song.

Truly solid new record from a band that has been one of the best in town in one way or another for quite some time now. If you like to move your body to weird rock music Disposable Camera will give you plenty of opportunities to do so.
