It’s tempting, in composing an opening for this unpaid ad, to invoke, by way of instant context, the outbreak of intra-Semitic bloodshed in Israel in recent weeks. But to do so would be regrettably reductive, not to mention off-point. For one thing, the five films featured in this latest installment of the long-running annual showcase — which takes place, coincidentally or not, just after the MFA’s Palestine-focused fest — cover plenty of extra-Israeli ground. France, Iraq, Australia, the United States, Ethiopia — they or their representatives all put in appearances in a series of films, docs and features both, engaged with questions of identity, history, persecution and preservation.
