Dan Shea:
Creatively, how have these covid times been for you?

Pink Navel:
This has been a time of practice and skill honing for me. A huge part of my song writing process was performing and with that gone I’ve really had to switch gears. I’ve been exploring different workflows and mediums altogether which has been fun! The silver lining of quarantine for me is that opportunity to explore and practice in a more private level.

DS:
Are you still up in Portland, Maine? Before the pandemic were you playing live much?

PN:
Yes! I live in a town 20 minutes south of Portland. I am in love with this area, it holds a special place in my hearts as the HQ of Ruby Yacht’s Soulfolks Records. We used to have the most amazing shows here, the magic is indescribable via text.

DS:
This damn pandemic needs to end so I can catch me some live Navel. I am such a fan ofyour live performing style, who are some of your influences in that regard?

PN:
I of course owe respect to all who have wielded the SP404 before me, as I’ve learned from watching them all. In person and online, I’ve spent a significant amount of time studying my OG’s use of this gear and others. The foundation of my influence is there. However, I also take a huge influence from my time as a emo band front person, which I hope makes my show unique 🙂

DS:
How’s goes your toymaking effort? Where do you take inspiration from in that realm?

PN:
The Crafsman on youtube is not only the best YouTube channel, but also home to the best modern DIY toy maker. I aspired to get into toy making for a number of years before ever getting serious about doing it. But, when I saw Crafsmans videos, he made the process as clear and simple as I could’ve asked for. At the time, there wasn’t much new media that talked about these techniques, so finding this Black creator online who has such an amazing fatherly, teacher energy… it was very motivating. Again shoutout the crafsman he is truly a master OG.

DS:
What can we expect from sunday’s stream? What else is on the horizon for you?

PN:
honesty, life has been a little crazy right now and i truly may hit this shoe acapella, hahah. I’m ready to bring forth these bars from a tape i have coming out on feb 5th. called PINK POUND— a collaboration between myself and Maine based producer Won Pound. Stoked to share what I can and I hope all enjoy.
