Leaving Records/ Stones Throw Records, both based in Los Angeles (and both known for left of center/ underground hip-hop and other stranger end of the spectrum beat oriented electronic music) earlier this year released the s/t album by Florida’s SURFACE TO AIR MISSIVE. From Tallahassee (I had a great time there one time) just like HEARTY WHITE these guys have made one of the strangest rock albums that I’ve heard in a while. Psychedelic pop sure, but taken way outside the box and tenderized with love by the single person (Taylor Ross) behind this all over the place force of rock nature. Above we have the video for “Surfacing”, a song off the self-titled album, and also the video for “Missive”, a song not on the self-titled album. Not sure I can remember a double dip vid like this, but hey, what can I remember? Wailing guitars, classic/Southern rock style permeate the overall odd song structures found on these 2 tracks. A far more raw and rocking early-ish OF MONTREAL or a way more guitar worshiping QUIET HOOVES are attempts at likening this to something. But really what it comes down to is that this is reverential and genre-busting at the same time which is, just as this music makes you feel, awesome. Video befits music. Spread some of this on your winter sandwich.
