Chillwave is dead, or close to it, leaving synths and reverb at large to find new employment. And so they make a glimmering cameo in Sur Back‘s “Trophy Daughter”, an off-kilter pop single from her newly released Kitsch EP. Sur Back is the stage name of Jupiter, Florida’s Caroline Sans, whose honeyed vocals are an apt fit for gentle synths and unpredictable electronic glitches. What do the lyrics mean? Who knows. (Sur Back mysteriously croons, “Aspirin of diaspora, no you can’t build/on intention alone.”) But what’s for certain is that “Trophy Daughter” is the perfect electro-baroque pop song to herald in high summer.
