Fresh Stream

LA punks Spokenest are back with another release after last year’s LP, and it’s a banger. Though Spokenest is only a duo, they are capable of whipping up an unholy racket with sloppy, strangled guitar playing and hard-hitting drums, not to mention the creative use of dual male and female vocals. This 4-song cassette is scrappy, catchy DIY punk at it’s most furious, somewhat in the mode of the Minutemen with poppier influences replacing the jazz and funk. Every song feels like it could fall apart at any moment, giving these 4 songs an intense vitality. And even though these songs are short, there are some truly great moments in there. Check the slowed tempo at the end of “Listen” or the beautiful vocal melody and jangling chords that end “Lose.” If you’re a fan of The Bananas, Brain Flannel, these guys’ previous band God Equals Genocide, or shambolic punk in general then give Spokenest a listen.
