A midden is a pile of refuse. This album (this three-hour album) called MIDDEN is a gigantic pile of wobbly outcast funk. Miniature funk bits composed of bass, electric piano, and drums. Sometimes there’s no piano. Sometimes other sounds invade. Brief clips just long enough for anti-groove to be established and then the rug is pulled out from under each small thing. All of this sounds like it was recorded in the tunnel system beneath Las Vegas. Maybe that’s what this is?
The music of the tunnel people of Vegas . . . an untrue thought, though it actually makes sense (to me anyway) . . .
Naw, SP-MOLD is Matthewdavid, the producer behind releases on BRAINFEEDER, PLUG RESEARCH, and LEAVING RECORDS (his own label). These include collaborations with the likes of SUN ARAW and rapper SERENGETI.
Matthewdavid, and thus SP-MOLD, is not the creator of funky, dusty breakbeats. However, he IS the (prolific) creator of off, slightly broken, and funky subterranean breakbeat notions.
With Midden, Matthewdavid unloads a dump truck of weird funk on the world. Via LEAVING RECORDS, and FREE no less. Three hours of washed-out, shaky-hands, deflated funk.
