SOUTHERN FEMISPHERE — THREE QUESTIONS FOR INTEGRATING

by

After listening to this record and this band a few times over, you’ll realize two things: “Southern Femisphere” is surprisingly challenging to say ten times fast (try it), but the band of that name is well, hella good. Hailing from Charleston, South Carolina, Southern Femisphere got its start churning out Weezer covers but soon found its niche performing wispy, raw post-punk with a subtly feminist message. Nope, this band doesn’t sound anything like Weezer (at all) — if anything, the relentlessly eerie bass and guitar lines point to NYC post-punk of the early 2000’s (*cough*Interpol*cough*) as an influence. But the group’s unique two- and sometimes three-part vocals set them apart, making each song unpredictable and anything but formulaic pop.

Ultimately, Southern Femisphere is all about smartly defying boundaries, musical and otherwise. Cases in point: the band thanks the words of Virginia Woolf among other Bandcamp shoutouts and track four of Three Questions is called “Transgander II”. They’re impossibly cool while unusually accepting—a rare combo, no?

Check out Three Questions streaming below via the group’s Bandcamp page, or grab it on cassette via Standard Issue.
