BOSTON/NE BANDS, Fresh Stream

Saralee — Dogs

by

After over two years of waiting, we’re at last privy to a new release from Boston’s masters of balmy, lo-fi garage-pop: Saralee. The band’s latest full-length is Dogs. Recorded in the woods of Maine in the summer of 2014, it’s not hard to imagine songs like “Animals” and, of course, “Hazy Shade of Summer” having been born of mid-summer daydreams before being tooled into carefree pop songs. Now they’re a much-needed souvenir of New England summer, which this time of year feels like it must have been nothing but a hallucination.

Generally, Dogs is a little bit thicker and grittier than 2013’s more minimal self-titled album, yet it’s no less raw and genuinely felt. And when everything about Boston seems to be ever-changing, it’s comforting that Saralee sticks with the same understated garage-rock sound we’ve always loved.
