Santigold — “Chasing Shadows”

by

It takes a queen of cool to make ennui seem interesting, but Santigold (not surprisngly) is up to the task like a boss. In “Chasing Shadows”, we find the ever-hip Santigold uncomfortable in her loneliness and contemplating the meaning of life– especially her future as a public, artistic figure. Though she’s one of the lucky few has always seemed ageless, Santigold is closing in on 40 and knows she is not immune to the passage of time. She notes that it “waits for nobody” and later asks, “why they eatin’ idols up?” (If there’s ever a question for 2016, that’s the one.)

“Chasing Shadows” is bouncy, pensive, and a little bit sad all at once. Its sparse, almost chamber-pop production veers a bit into indie rock territory, not surprising given that Vampire Weekend alum Rostam Batmanglij produced the song, along with others off the full album, 99¢. Yet “Chasing Shadows” is still quintessentially Santigold.

99¢ is out now, and Santigold will be stopping by the House of Blues in Boston on May 3.
