Out there in the weird wild West (of Massachusetts that is) lives many a creative soul. One of these is polyartist SAM GAS CAN whose latest tape just came out on W.Virginia label Crash Symbols. I SAT AROUND TODAY lives up to its cheeky title by compiling the playful collaborative meanderings of Sam and a rotating cast of likeminded friends (Sarah Smith, John Moloney, Joseph Bastardo and Orion Russell to name a few). As haphazard as that sounds, there is a cohesion achieved that belies practice and intention. The lineup is smartly arranged, and flows quixotically via audio strokes with samples, AM-DJ patter and voicemail brushes. Sam and pals wield an aesthetic that combines a serious application of Dada and Pop-Art ideals to music construction with just plain silliness. If you’re someone who shares this love for lo-fi experiment and fun, then this is a recording you can enjoy loud, ideally with good friends in the car, heading out for adventures.
