Lynton Donovan, group member of the disbanded Satanic Rockers and current member of Assetstripper, has created something actually sacred in his release of $ a Ride via solo project Sacred Product. Born in New Zealand and currently a resident of Melbourne, Donovan has been a part of the underground scene for a long time, but this is one of his first few solo releases as Sacred Product. $ a Ride was released by Quemada Records about a month ago.

Many have described it as resembling UK DIY sounds of yore. The lofi recordings of scuzzy sounds bring you images of a basement with leaking pipes and bending floorboards above your head, a similar basement to where I would guess this music was probably born. There are moments when the garage rock guitar riffs start to resemble those of Ty Segall.

This 6 song EP talks about calling in sick, unemployment, driving drunk, riding a bicycle into the river. The lyrics parallel the erratic and trashed tone of the instrumentals. Alternating between whispers and screams, Donovan’s intense profanity and insults reflect the passion of a non-conformist in the best way. “Working for some fucker is just a fucking waste of my time,” Donovan chants in “Working is a Waste”. It is easy to imagine a group of people, young and old, head banging to these songs. Whether or not you’re in the basement of some show house in Melbourne, it is hard not to get swept up in that.
