ROOMRUNNER- SEPARATE

by

Go listen to ROOMRUNNER. Go listen to Roomrunner to get pumped up for that job interview. Go listen to Roomrunner when your friend won’t get back to you about the plans made for tonight. Go listen to Roomrunner to faze out the guy who won’t stop harassing you on the train. Just please, get it out of your system, and go listen to Roomrunner.

Following their 2013 album, Ideal Cities, this Baltimore-based group is back with a vengeance with their new EP Separate. Without straying far from their alternative and punk 90’s sound, the band has managed to generate a new compilation of exhilarating and hectic noise. The entire EP is unquestionably catchy and pulls you in its whirlpool of an urgent frenzy. There is a loathing apathy to Denny Bowen’s voice and lyrics, and it’s starkly offset by the sporadic waves of unpredictable guitar and the potent drumming. You’re never quite sure where the songs will take you, but the dizziness feels all too familiar and healthy.

“Chrono Trigger” is a superstar track, animated from the first taste. Named after one of the greatest video games of all the time (look it up, it’s worth the search), the song strikes from every periphery. Evocative of Failure and Hum’s sound, the song feels meticulously manic and packs a clean punch.

The band is currently on tour and, just as their albums would imply, put on a fast and impressive show. Despite notoriously trashing their equipment and starting some of the funnest mosh pits around, Roomrunner remains tight in their live sound and deliver a genuine energy to their performance.
