Queercore band PWR BTTM pushes the boundaries of both DIY music and the gender binary in their September release of Dirty Cherries. Self described as gay glam punk, this New York band makes glitter look dull.
The music video for title track “Ugly Cherries” makes you wish you could rock a necklace of plastic bananas and smudged red lipstick. (Quote from my favorite song “I Wanna Boy” by them: “I wanna boy who thinks its sexy when my lipstick bleeds.”) And they’re insanely high energy live; if you get a chance, check out the video of them playing live at the Silent Barn. Your neck will be sore from head banging.
Other personal favorites include “Dairy Queen”, released as a single in August and “All the Boys”. This record was done with Salvation Recording in New Paltz, New York. I am in love with the band’s humor, sense of style, and edgy vocals. Their honesty in being so completely glam punk and their fearlessness in wearing shit like girl scout vests to live recordings is what makes them so good. PS they’re in Boston March 3rd… I’ll see you there.
