Today, Boston Hassle is… BALTIMORE HASSLE??

That’s right, this post is to give our readers a heads up about the New/Next Film Fest in Baltimore, MD, which is running from Thursday, October 3rd to Sunday, October 6th at the Charles Theatre. This is only the festival’s second year, but it seems primed to become a new standard for alternative and independent film, much like our own beloved Boston Underground Film Festival. Wish I could make it down myself, but the next best thing I can do is promote the work of a filmmaker I admire!

As Hassle readers know, I am a massive fan of the work of Albert Birney. Best known for his Sundance hit Strawberry Mansion, co-directed with Kentucker Audley, he is also a multimedia artist with works in every kind of filmmaking and animation. His characters Tux and Fanny have two feature films and an excellent throwback point and click adventure game. The point is, everything Birney creates is magic, so of course I was thrilled to see he is premiering a new short at New/Next this week.

Gruenfeld is the story of a brave knight (Birney), home from a long journey, who finds temptation in a strange book. As the piece is only ten minutes long, I’m not going to give a summary and spoil the fun. Just know the short is beautifully shot (on a used 16mm camera, according to Birney’s post) and filled with Birney’s signature handcrafted props, visual gags, and music. Hopefully I can see it on the big screen soon!

If you’re in the Baltimore area, give the lineup of features and shorts a look – you’re sure to discover something you’ve never seen before.

Gruenfeld premieres this Saturday, October 5th, at The Charles Theatre at 3:30pm! Part of the New/Next Film Fest!
