One of those groups whose name I knew long before I knew their music, PORTER RICKS, has just released their first record since the 1990s (included the 19, just in case you thought I meant the 1890s). Since I wasn’t looking in the right places for techno and it’s relatives during that decade it becomes easy to understand how I missed out on PORTER RICKS the first time around (when they were putting out records on CHAIN REACTION and FORCE INC.).
The duo has emerged however, beginning with last year’s SHADOW BEAT EP, and now with their first long player since 1999’s SYMBIOTICS. The new record is called ANGUILLA ELECTRICA, and like SHADOW BEAT legendary German label/club TRESOR has released it. If dub and futurist techno is your cup of “tea” then you can’t do better than PORTER RICKS who ride the line between ambient texture and bubbling techno like few others. At around the 4:40 mark in “Port Of Tangency” I begin to feel as if I’ve made it. My fav track is “Scuba Rondo” though. Crunchy bass, a presence out on the perimeter. A shuffle of a groove, off putting-ly bouncy this one. This whole record has the feeling of being interfered with. As if the intended broadcast has been intercepted and what we are receiving is being filtered through something. Spectral. Extraterrestrial. Porter Ricks.
