PINKSHINYULTRABLAST – GRANDFEATHERED

SPUTNIK OF ELECTRONIC MUSIC

by

Let’s take a poll; when was the last time you listened to Russian shoe gaze?

Did you laugh?

Well shut up and pay attention. Native St. Petersburg band Pinkshinyultrablast has come out with their second release Grandfeathered. This is a follow-up EP to last January’s Everything Else Matters. Dropped on February 26 via ClubAC30, this record proves Pinkshinyultrablast has become a ragtag bunch of electronic gurus. Rather than a burst of galactic synth explosions like their first release, Grandfathered is 8 tracks of delicate shoegaze basslines and chord progressions.

“Kiddy Pool Dreams” is drowsy-sounding in a good way; it actually feels like wearing a pair of floaties and staring at the sun. Although the band has named their influences as being My Bloody Valentine, Cosmicdust and Astrobrite, “I Catch You Napping” sounds similar to a lot of the melodies of MØ’s songs, and “Grandfathered” almost leaks into the sounds of PC label artist Hannah Diamond. “Glow Vastly” starts out with a super heady riff but immediately verges into the ethereal that becomes characteristic of Pinkshinyultrablast on this record.

This might have something to do with the fact that I have been rewatching all the Star Wars movies but the futuristic, space sound is really working for me. And don’t lie– we know you saw Episode 7 too. You’ll be vibing with this record by the end of “Initial”.
