PILE – “Special Snowflakes”

by

The essential Bostonian hard rocking men of PILE are finally done keeping new jams held tightly to their chest. With a new 7″, SPECIAL SNOWFLAKES b/w MAMA’S LIPSTICK, due out at the end of March on EXPLODING IN SOUND RECORDS, they’ve finally let some new sounds trickle out. It must be hard to actually record new music when you tour as much as these road warriors. Seriously, the title of “Hardest Working Band In The Boston Underground” could not fit any other performer(s) better. Kris you still running that speakeasy? I would love to stop in…whenever it is that you guys are actually in Boston!?!

“Special Snowflakes” is the epic track given us to end the PILE dry spell. The 7″ that houses it is the band’s first released recordings since 2012’s DRIPPING. If you’ve been wondering where the twisting and turning hard rock, and melodic pummel of PILE will go, this is the answer. If you’ve been a fan you’ll recognize some of the results spread across the song’s 7+ minutes!?! The song is a roller coaster, man. Loud quiet loud has been on the menu before, but here the foursome offers up several different takes on the form within the same song. The grungy hard rock is present, but so are sections bearing the markings of noise pop/shoegaze. Hushed sections offer up falsetto, piano and much in the way of exquisite guitar playing. These guys also know how to use vocal harmony to build the tension. In fact I’m not sure I know another band that has as many levels of tension to dial up within the rock context. A beast of a track. Keeping the rock alive.

And make sure to check out the show that we’re throwing for PILE’s 7″ RELEASE on 3/30 @ GREAT SCOTT in ALLSTON. It’s also the band’s last show of tour, so come help in welcoming them home.
