PHAZE – BACKWARDS

by

Boston is never quiet, even late into the night and in the wee hours of morning. Accordingly, Phaze‘s “Backwards” starts with twenty seconds of a quiet drone–perhaps the early calm before the morning rush begins– before a gentle bass line eases in, followed in by a zig-zagging guitar and wavering, calculatedly hesitant vocals.

I walked down Brighton Avenue/Stare at the crosswalk/And I see you…every green light leads to you. These lyrics make you appreciate city living and the day-to-day coincidences that might not happen in a less dense place.

“Backwards” defies genre– I guess it would appeal most to the garage/DIY psych blues set (is that a thing? It must be)– but more definitively, it’s an Allston Love Song if there ever was one. In love, in Allston? In love with Allston? Interpret as you will.

Listen below, and keep an ear out for the forthcoming full album later this summer.
