PERFECT PUSSY – SAY YES TO LOVE

by

The label Captured Tracks provides some of the best jangly pop rock around, home to synth-soaked artists like Mac DeMarco and Beach Fossils. But the label took a turn and released some new sounds with Syracuse-based hardcore punks Perfect Pussy’s first full-length album, “Say Yes to Love”. The heart of the band is arguably powerhouse vocalist Meredith Graves, who manages to be both urgent and wild. Graves’ sustains this intense vocal style through the entire album, igniting the angry power in their sound. The album is a stormy chaos of guitars and heavy bass lines, all drenched in fuzz and reverb. The album is also complex and meaningful lyrically, so much so that it is almost a shame that some of the words get lost in the mix. Graves’ is outspoken and intelligent, not shying away from political, social, and personal topics in her lyrics.  Graves has important things to say, and that drives Perfect Pussy’s music to even deeper and darker places than their grinding sound already does. The song “Interference Fits”, for example, explores continuing disenchantment with love and marriage, Graves’ demanding in the lyrics from which the album gets its title, “since when did we all decide to give up? since when do we say yes to love?”. An album that is full of messages that the band wants heard, it has the right amount noisy punk chaos to do so.

Be sure not to miss Perfect Pussy when they tear down the Sinclair with their equally angry punk pop friends Joanna Gruesome in August.
