PALM SPRING LIFE – “SEA MONKEYS”

by

Please forgive my preconceived notions, but when I found out that Palm Spring Life‘s “Sea Monkeys” was birthed in Allston Rock City, I was kinda floored. Nothing about it recalls the grit and grime and general weirdness I’ve come to expect from Allston, but (or maybe because of that) I’ve been playing it on repeat anyways. “Sea Monkeys” is summer breeze without being too obvious, it’s a wave washing ashore without being too trite; it’s a sweeping, epic summer anthem without being too pretentious or fake. That last bit is the most important– sometimes songs that try too hard to be “epic” just make you want to puke from their insincerity (I try to turn them off before that happens), but this one is genuine enough to really work, making it a good candidate for seaside listening. In a year or two, Palm Spring Life will inevitably be signed by Merge, don’t you think? Until then, stream “Sea Monkeys” as we eagerly anticipate the release of the band’s full-length album, SWIMSWIMSWIMS. Happy summer, y’all!
