Evan Caminiti continues his slow drift into synth for his latest non-Barn Owl release. Shelter Press just unleashed Caminiti’s first full-length under his Painted Caves moniker. Modular synthesizer is the main tool of exploration here. Sounds have been stretched and warped through re-taping and digital production, making the final product share some kinship to some of Leyland Kirby’s darker material (think the Intrigue & Stuff twelves or that fantastic new Stranger LP).
“Event Boundary” gives tantalizes the listener with a dense serving of heaving, destroyed drone creeping over a Basic Channeling bass beat. One can feel the surge of darkness coming from underneath the city – whether it be Caminiti’s San Francisco or Boston, the disenchantment and despair runs deep. With a Cronenberg bent, Painted Caves seems intent on illuminating the shadowy forces that color our daily urban existence. Buy into it here.
