The lofi bedroom pop tunes of You Will Live in a Cool Box will have you jumping in circles around your twin bed way past bedtime. Naps is a band from Tallahassee made up by Jeremy Probst, Katryn Macko, Laura Hicks and Ryan Stanley. You Will Live in a Cool Box is a 5 song EP that the band released in July, with 4 original songs and a cover of R.L. Kelly’s “You’re Not the Only Monster From Hell”.

With soft, almost monotone vocals and raw guitar riffs, at times Naps verges on garage rock. It feels vulnerable in the bittersweetness of “Jean Skirt Mystique” and honest in the sandpaper rough sounds of “Sandspurs”. The male and female vocals mix well in a numbing, angsty kind of way, which works best in R.L. Kelly’s “You’re Not the Only Monster From Hell”. The hook in “Ellen Degenerate” paints an image of teens in leather vests trying to emulate The Ramones’s “Sheena is a Punk Rocker”.

The DIY style of this band is just what makes it so easy to connect to. At times ambient and at times begging to be heard, Naps creates plenty of opportunities to practice that air guitar or just lock the bedroom door and twirl around. Still new and still so genuine, Naps captures just what is so great about the grassroots scene.
