Motel TV – My Ice Cream is Melting

by

For the lack of a better word, Motel TV’s 2016 summer release, My Ice Cream is Melting, is overwhelmingly nostalgic. Nostalgia can manifest itself in a lot of things: the scent of the spring air, a song favored by a past lover or the sight of a regularly walked avenue. But no matter what, there is an element of sadness and longing that exists in an otherwise fond memory, and this is exactly what My Ice Cream is Melting captures.

The EP begins with “Safe (Super Safe),” which traipses through the bittersweet shadows left by memories. Even the sound manages to be a nostalgic combination—it’s modern, mellow indie rock with delicate, subtle vocals and qualities characteristic of ‘90’s shoegaze, while also having the sheer catchiness and charm of slower early 2000’s pop rock hits. Yet, the track (and subsequent tracks to follow) maintain their own identity independent of what influences are speckled throughout.

The second track, “Lay Down, Freak Out,” is perhaps the most striking of the entire EP. The song was practically made to soundtrack a solemn, reflective walk alone. The simplistic minor chords mope, and the tinkering guitar and drum lines sigh. All the while, you slow dance with your mistakes and woes. It’s melancholy, but oddly comforting, offering a warm hug in a time of need.

“Buy Me a Dream” and “Crumb” gracefully close My Ice Cream is Melting. The tracks are rampant with emotion—frustration, sorrow, reminiscence. Though the emotions seem to be negatively charged (an inference based on the minor chords and deliberate drum beats present in the EP), My Ice Cream is Melting is decidedly homey and familiar. It’s a soundtrack for the imperfect life, making the EP accessible, relatable and despite it all, rather pleasant.
