Moon Hooch – Red Sky

by

Sometimes you hear music and other times the music just gets inside you and takes control. Brooklyn’s Moon Hooch is clearly a case of the latter where their live shows rarely leave an audience member standing still. Made up of two saxophonists and a drummer, it’s an idea that shouldn’t work on paper but then who thinks about that when they’re already dancing?

Starting out in the NYC subway, their origins have helped craft a sound that can’t be ignored. On their third album Red Sky, the band further blurs the line of genres blending funk, prog and electronics into their already energetic jazz sound. At times they sound like the house band for a King Crimson party (“Red Sky”) or that they’re celebrating an oncoming apocalypse (“Psychotubes“), but either way their own description as “cave music” is accurate as there’s always a visceral feel that connects it all. Picking up from their last album they also continue to experiment with vocals in “Sunken Ship” that reveal more than a band that just wants to make you sweat.

Be sure to catch them on tour now and you might be lucky enough to get them to play as your personal alarm clock the next morning!
