MOHAMMAD – “Sakrifis”

by

The PAN label, with their unquenchable experimental thirst for experimental sounds, have given release to MOHAMMAD’s (third and) new record, SOM SAKRIFIS. The chamber music trio of Coti K (contrabass), ILIOS (oscillators) and Nikos Veliotis (cello) are based in Greece and traffic in the sounds found at the lower depths of the sonic spectrum. The drones created by these three truly scrape at the lower depths, of sound yes, but also of your gut. This is music felt. The great Hungarian filmmaker Bela Tarr is name dropped on the PAN site in description of these sounds, and if they hadn’t mentioned him I would have found my own way to the very logical connection between the epic slow unfolding of the art of both Tarr and MOHAMMAD. “Sakrifis” boasts a very creepy video of a phantasm-like horse, and really little else would fit this terribly haunting music. The instrumentation is menacing, the composition is menacing and when I close my eyes endless space is conjured. Outer space, the bottom of the sea; the dank void is the space that these droning strings and electronics inhabit. It’s been a couple minutes since a “drone” record grabbed me this hard. It’s a good idea to check out SOM SAKRIFIS and its 3 tracks.
