MINI DRESSES — THREE

by

Whoa. MINI DRESSES. Where did this totally awesome band come from? (Answer: Austin, TX.) The now Somerville-based duo has hit a proverbial ball out of the park with their latest release, Three. Not unlike comparable female-fronted shoegaze musical acts of the modern era (Melody’s Echo Chamber and Vivian Girls come to mind), Mini Dresses’ gentle sunny-day pop is glazed with just the right amount of reverb and fuzz. The slow-burning “Me and Mine” is a fave, as is the dreamy “Strangers”.

Admittedly, lots of bands are creating music in a similar vein as Mini Dresses, or at least trying to, with varying degrees of success. But Three has some intangible quality that gets better with every listen. Three‘s hooks are complex, and while they aren’t immediate ear worms, they stay with you once you understand them.

Download Three on Bandcamp, listen to it now, and remember it for hot car rides next summer. Mini Dresses will also be playing O’Brien’s in Allston on November 3.
