Pan Sonic-droneslayer Mika Vainio returns after the dazzling Kilo from earlier this year with a menacing collaboration with iDEAL Recordings boss Joachim Nordwall. Vainio and Nordwall got down and dirty at Einstürzende Neubauten’s Berlin studio in the early Summer of 2010. The darkness of both discographies remains, but instead of the solitary monoliths of Kilo or Nordwall’s slowly paced Psychic Propaganda, listeners are treated to a thrillingly organic collaboration.
“Irkutsk” is a perfect example. Neubauten-referencing metallic pounding undermines the natural development of a pulsing drone. Just when both elements might congeal, the whole affair is throttled to the point of extinction, and we beg for more. Out now on Touch.
