MEATBODIES – DISORDER

by

The second you flip on the new self-titled Meatbodies record — released last month on In The Red records — you’ll know where it comes from. (There’s something in the California water that gives all the guitars there extra crunch). You also might figure out that frontman Chad Ubovich is tight with Ty Segall and Mikal Cronin — he’s brought his chops to both of their touring bands, and he brought some of their laconic vocal attitude back to his.

But Meatbodies are more than the sum of their influences. “Disorder” (the first proper track on the album after a one minute synth-squall intro) is a perfect 2.5 minute slice of pogo-punk, reminiscent of the Ramones more than anyone else. “Outta my head, into the street,” Ubovich recites as guitars build three-chord pyramids behind him. The drums crash loosely on, and bite-sized whoops provide a sugary garnish. If you’ve ever liked a rock song before, you’ll like this one.

Spin it to get your blood pumping as the weather here gets sluggish — if it really does snow next week and you need a double-dose of rock candy, the wind-down at the end gives you plenty of time to hit the repeat button before you move on to the (equally killer) rest of the album.
