M. GEDDES GENGRAS – “THE LAST TIME WE WERE HERE”

by

M. Geddes Gengras has plenty of surface-level activity to interact with – his solo output on Leaving Records is well-documented, as well as his fantastic collaboration with Cameron Stallones (Sun Araw) and the Congos (plus, Duppy Gun for sure). Underneath these pursuits resides a wealth of material, only guarded by the ghosts of their limited production. Thankfully, Mexico City-based Umor Rex has decided to give us another collection of Gengras’s lesser known works. This second volume, subtitled New Process Music, focuses on Gengras’s integration of higher value post-production into his already well-developed modular style.

Our first taste is “The Last Time We Were Here”, a track that strikes the difference (and holds the tension) between quick change and long sustain. The mood is permanent – technological melancholy, inability to focus, calm repetition just out of reach. Each passage emphasizes one of these, from the pitter-patter of the introduction to the oscillations that jump through the finale. Pre-order the fancy color LP here.
