Merrill Garbus, apparently a native New Englander, uses mussed up world music beats and riffs that serve as the base for some yelling, and some nice harmonies, and indeed some african sounding melodies that at times are turned back in on themselves and could cause dizziness. A new record whokills is out on 4AD. It is full of West African sounding guitar lines, lovely vocals, and dance beats. “Little Tiger” found on her site below adds some electronics to the mix for some pleasing bits of blip. THE DIRTY PROJECTORS will find their way into reviews of TUNEYARDS due to shared sounds, but that is more generalization than anything else. These are some interesting, and interestingly danceable sounds. Sounds that come with a serious voice (and vocal style attached) that is helmed by a familiar that knows how to wield it. Playing @ Brighton Music Hall on 5/16.
