This guy is one half of BLACK MOTH SUPER RAINBOW. The psychedelic haze that envelops all of what that crew does is partially lifted for what TOBACCO does alone. Then it is replaced somewhat by grungy ass drum machines, synths, samples, and some of the sludgierrrrrst bass lines heard in these parts(planet earth) in some time. At heart these are hip hop beats as shown through that BLACK MOTH filter. MANIAC MEAT came out on ANTICON last year and is just what I wish more electronic musicians were doing with their time: that is, taking hip-hop, turning it sideways on its head and fucking with it. Beck makes some appearances on that record and does nothing to enhance the proceedings. “Lick The Witch” is a mid-tempo stomp full of glittering synths and some of that trademark woozy vocal. “Constellation Dirtbike Head” is almost a rocker and would be if it weren’t for the fuzz bass and wiling out synths doing all the heavy lifting. Head bobbing, dirty synth hop action that you can count on being able to dance to. Strong stuff! Was followed up by a partial remix record featuring a couple new tracks called LA UTI, also on ANTICON. The rapping on that record doesn’t help much either. Perhaps the tracks are just too nasty? Looking forward to what comes next.
