Here my friends we have the CONET PROJECT. One of the most fascinating, creepy, and otherworldly sound documents ever. What is it? Well, it’s recordings of shortwave radio transmission broadcasts of numbers stations made by or collected(from enthusiasts’ recordings going back some 50 years. THANK GOD FOR ENTHUSIASTS) by the curator of the project, one Akin Fernandez. Fernandez released the collection on his Irdial Discs. What are numbers stations? Well, they are mysterious encrypted messages composed of tones, snippets of songs, repeated number patterns, and the shortwave’s static and fuzz. The prevailing notion is that these numbers stations exist in order for spies around the world to covertly communicate with their comrades. Here’s a nice article on the project and phenomena. But its not just the origin of the recordings that make them mysterious, though that of course adds to the whole experience. Light a candle, turn off the lights, make some tea, invite gary over and put this on and have an EXPERIENCE.
