Case Mahan, aka Street Gnar, makes infectious lo-fi psych to rattle your brain and warm your bones. This Kentucky native popped onto our radar last summer with an excellent collection of tunes entitled Poking the World with a Stick, but its his latest release, Study Wall, thats got us all in a tizzy. On the surface this may appear like just another druggy bedroom pop diddler, but it wont take long for those rambling folksy tunes to seep deep into your bloodstream and take over your body till your grooving along to the hazy hooks and moaned refrains that slowly break down into trailing reverb-scapes. Comparisons to the VU are usually exaggerated and pretentious, but they are, in this case, all too appropriate. For contemporary ears, the motorik synther and fellow Kentuckian Trailblazer is a good point of reference. But this brother is surely ridin’ his own jam, and it shows. Just click below, close your eyes and find yourself coasting down a midnight highway at 100mph, watching the stars blur by. Don’t worry, Street Gnar is at the wheel, he’ll take you places.
Catch the duder himself playing next month at the oh-so-epic you’d-be-a-fool-to-forget RAW MEAT FEST. Stay tuned, we’ll have more about that soon enough. Till then…
