Out of tune samples. A distinct and strangely pop message. Guitars and bass, and myriad rhythmic approaches, keyboards doing many things, and even a bunch of horns slithering all around. It is a unique, and uniquely pop musical world that QUIET HOOVES has created and inhabits. Quiet Hooves were one of our TOP 15 bands that played a Bodies of Water show in 2010… where we said of them: 8-bit drenched weird pop East Coast style. Love.
But that is only part of their overall sound, and probably even better representative of their sister band also playing tonight in Boston with them, Bubbly Mommy Gun. Quiet Hooves seem to know their way through the mazes of all popular and not popular musics and have set about creating a beautiful and intriguing new pop sound. “Can’t Catch A Break” is a serious nugget off of their record SADDLE UP out on Party Party Partners. Sounding as if Pavement was jamming with a bunch of keyboards and samplers and some Middle Eastern influences, this tune gets stuck in your head while at the same time making you shake that very same head in an act of wonder. All over and nowhere but there at the same time, and from down the coast in Athens, Ga. If you’re looking for new and weird and poppy, well, here it is.
