Serious 90s loud quiet loud pop unto noisiness going on here in PILE’s second release and first on vinyl. PILE comes to us bearing scars of post-hardcore but transcending them with real singing, real screaming and some seriously lively guitars. This album is heavy but so melodic, and interestingly so. It pulls off managing to be very groove laden while incorporating lots of smart starts and stops. Things get furious at times, and also very pretty at other times. And then they throw the occasional classic rock move in just to stir everybody up. PILE are riff masters; presenting them in different styles, with different attitudes, but always so damn freshly. The pop people will love the many “oohs” throughout. Others will love the Nirvana-punk moments all over this thing. Me, I love it all. But to pick one that really stirs me up I’ll go with the opener, “UNCLE JILL”. Damned if they don’t take us for a roller coaster ride on this one. Heavy, but so epically beautiful, and just so well kept, yet messy at the same time. This does remind me of the 90s so much, but I’m not even going to mention any ghosts of my youth that might bring down you the reader’s general opinion of these guys. PILE are better than those bands I might have mentioned anyway, so it doesn’t really matter. Boston release of the year thus far for me yo.
