Los Dug Dugs were definitely the most ripping garage psych group operating out of Mexico in the late 60s/70s. Originally making it big in Tijuana, and later in Mexico City this band took the raging psychedelia that had dripped across the border from the U.S. and applied crazy grooves to it, winding up with some of the most bombastically danceable psych rock that has ever been created. There’s extended soloing, there are mad flute and guitar double helixes formed creating major lift offs into outer space, and there is some truly great riffage pointing to the fact that these guys clearly had some Sabbath records lying around. And the songs are great and hummable, and so so catchy. But the thing that really truly stands out about Los Dug Dugs is the insanely high energy. The non-stop drum pummeling of the listener. The riff repetition creating grooves so deep that for some lucky listeners there may possibly no return from within them. These records have to have been sampled. A lot. Because of the groove oriented nature, of at least these first 2 records, DUG DUGS & SMOG sound thoroughly modern.
